Unpopular Opinions: Jack and Elizabeth

I share some of my "unpopular" thoughts about Jack and Elizabeth

I love Jack and Elizabeth. They were and still are one of my favorite couples in the series. I think their love story is timeless and will always be the thing that gave the show it’s original identity. I find their relationship to be so endearing and beautiful throughout most of their time together on the show. During Season 5 however, something changed between them. As most of you already know, I very recently finished my When Calls the Heart rewatch of Season 5. During this rewatch, I noticed some things that I had never really paid much attention to. One of those things was the clear difference in Jack and Elizabeth’s relationship compared to earlier seasons.

After Jack returned from the Northern Territories, there was an undeniable shift in his attention. He was very distant and evasive about his time up North, even though it was clearly always on his mind. Even Elizabeth couldn’t always reach him, and when she could, she wasn’t really able to help Jack work through his pain. It was honestly heartbreaking to see Jack mentally and emotionally drifting away from Elizabeth, and Elizabeth trying to bring him back. They loved each other of course, and were eager to start their future together, but it seemed as through something had come between them and changed their relationship.
